Corona situation “currently stable”: Söder wants to go to the Wiesn without a mask

For the first time in three years, the Oktoberfest in Munich can take place again. The Bavarian Prime Minister Söder has already announced his visit to the Wiesn - and wants to do without the protective mask.

The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder wants to visit the Oktoberfest without a respirator. "I come without a mask," said the CSU boss of the "Bild" newspaper. Everyone should "decide on their own responsibility whether and how they visit the Wiesn". The corona situation is "currently stable", there is "no growing burden in the hospitals," said Söder.

According to the current status, there is no obligation to wear a mask at the Oktoberfest in Munich. The Oktoberfest takes place from September 17th to October 3rd. The largest folk festival in the world had been canceled in the past two years due to the corona pandemic.

The organizer of the Oktoberfest would enforce a mask requirement at the folk festival in an emergency, but currently sees no reason to panic. "In view of today's incidences, I find it difficult to believe that a mask requirement will be introduced in Bavaria by October 1st and will affect the Oktoberfest," Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner told the editorial network Germany. Such a regulation would also be "no reason to cancel the Oktoberfest," he said. It is "manageable, even if I don't want it".

The new Infection Protection Act provides for nationwide rules such as wearing FFP2 masks in long-distance passenger transport. However, the federal states can set their own requirements, for example for a mask requirement in publicly accessible indoor areas or outdoors if a minimum distance of 1.50 meters cannot be maintained there.
