Disabled by onlookers: fire brigade brings fire in the Harz Mountains under control

The major fire on the Brocken did not spread any further three days after the fire broke out. However, 150 hectares are still affected. A spokesman for the district complains that onlookers are partially obstructing the extinguishing work and making the work of the emergency services more difficult.

Firefighters have brought the major fire on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains under control. According to the authorities, the fire that has been raging since Saturday has not spread further. A spokesman for the Harz district said this morning in Wernigerode. However, 150 hectares of forest are still affected by the fire.

Fire brigades are still on duty. Helicopters resumed fire-fighting operations from the air at 7.30 a.m., and fire-fighting aircraft are also expected, according to the spokesman. A total of seven helicopters and two firefighting aircraft are still involved in the work. Firefighting water is to be taken from Lake Concordia. The body of water therefore remains closed to visitors, just like the day before. Nevertheless, on Monday there were onlookers, as the spokesman said. This led to disabilities and was "a bit difficult" for the emergency services.

In addition, the fire brigade should also step up action on the ground against the fire. With a so-called walking excavator from the national park, the emergency services should be able to access the inaccessible burning area.

There are currently around 180 emergency services on site in the Harz National Park. Previously there had been up to 300 firefighters at the top. A firefighter was seriously injured on Monday when there was a deflagration during the extinguishing work on a device. A rescue helicopter brought him from the Brocken plateau to a special clinic for burn injuries.

The fire was discovered on Saturday on the so-called Goetheweg near the Goethebahnhof vantage point. The Goetheweg to the Brocken is one of the most frequented hiking trails in the Harz National Park. The disaster in the Saxony-Anhalt district of Harz is still valid. The place Schierke is closed.
