No 200 applications so far: hardly any interest in the "diverse" option in Berlin and Brandenburg

For almost four years, people have been able to change their gender to "diverse" in the population register. Very few people have made use of this in the capital region.

The category "diverse" has been entered in the birth register for almost four years - in the VBerlin and Brandenburg only very few people have made use of it so far. In the capital there were 137 corresponding entries in the population register, as announced by a spokesman for the interior administration. This is 0.0037 percent of the approximately 3.7 million inhabitants in Berlin. Since January 2019, people have been able to change their gender from male or female to the third option "diverse".

Most of the Divers entries were from people between the ages of 20 and 50. According to the spokesman, there were no miscellaneous entries for newborns. Almost three years ago, in March 2020, only 43 people were recorded as diverse in the population register. In April 2022 there were 106, as the Senate announced at the time in response to inquiries from MPs.

A spokeswoman said that three people in Potsdam between the ages of 36 and 42 had used the opportunity to be entered in the birth register with the category "diverse". That is 0.0016 percent with more than 186,200 inhabitants. According to a spokesman, a person in Oranienburg re-registered as "diverse" for the first time this year. However, there are currently no entries in Strausberg and Prenzlau, as city spokesmen said.
