The German Klaus Teuber, creator in 1995 of the strategy and chance board game Catan, died on Saturday, April 1, at the age of 70, according to the Catan company and the Kosmos publishing house in a statement.
"It is with deep sadness that we at Catan Studio announce the death of Klaus Teuber, legendary game designer and creator of the popular board game Catan. Our hearts go out to the Klaus family at this very difficult time," they said.
The game created by Teuber, which has inspired a novel, music and a movie (The Lord of Catan, 2014), combines strategy and chance to create towns using natural resources.
Teuber was one of Germany's best known board game creators and had also authored such board games as Up and Down and Nobility Oblige, as well as Barbarossa.
Kosmos recalled that the Catan game has been sold in 27 years, along with its extensions, more than 40 million units, has been translated into more than 40 languages and published in more than 70 countries.
He added that Teuber was working on the third volume of his trilogy of novels related to the popular game.
In 2002, Teuber founded the company Catan GmbH together with his wife and children, with whom he marketed the games he had developed. "With his many award-winning games, he has inspired millions of people around the world," said Kosmos-Verlag. With Catan he created a unique game universe, recalled the publishing company.
