Duchess Meghan: Lawyers want to dismiss her sister's lawsuit

In March 2022, Samantha Markle (57) filed a lawsuit for defamation against her half-sister Duchess Meghan (40). The reason: Some of the statements that Meghan made in the explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey (68) in March 2021 are said to be lies. Now the lawyers of Prince Harry's (37) wife have spoken again.

As reported by "Hello" magazine, citing court documents, Duchess Meghan's US legal team has requested that the case be dismissed. "Plaintiff first claims that she can refute that Meghan 'grew up as an only child'. But that perception is inherently irrefutable. It's hard to imagine a more personal and subjective feeling than how one views one's own childhood," argue the lawyers. Meghan's statements are much more "a textbook example of a subjective statement about how a person feels about their childhood".

Additionally, the plaintiff would ignore the full context of Meghan's response, which she gave to Oprah's question about her relationship with her half-sister. "Meghan's response to that question, that she was raised as an only child, was obviously not intended as a statement of any objective fact that she had no genetic siblings or half-siblings," the attorneys said.

Duchess Meghan's parents separated when she was two years old. Raised by her mother, she says she rarely saw her older half-sister Samantha.

In addition, Samantha Markle claims that "false and malicious statements" were made in the book "Finding Freedom" by Omid Scobie (41), which was authorized by Meghan and Harry. However, Meghan "cannot be held liable" for those statements because she did not write the book, her lawyers make it clear.

In the lawsuit, filed by Samantha Markle in early March 2022, she is seeking $75,000 in damages. Meghan's lawyers responded to the allegations shortly thereafter: The charges were "unfounded" and "absurd" and they would pay as little attention to the whole thing as possible.
