Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla: He opens the Commonwealth Games for the first time

Prince Charles (73) and Duchess Camilla (75) have given the starting signal for the 22nd Commonwealth Games. They appeared in an Aston Martin convertible for the opening of the event at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The couple clearly enjoyed the performance, as a video published on Twitter shows. It shows how Prince Charles drives the vintage car into the stadium and how he and his wife then get out of the car in a good mood.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall captioned the film: "Gets better with age," followed by a car emoji. The video caption continued: "The Prince and Duchess made a grand entrance at the opening ceremony of @BirminghamCG22 - in His Royal Highness' Aston Martin, which is powered by a by-product of wine and cheese."

The royal couple was dressed just as stylishly. Duchess Camilla wore a wide-leg navy blue jumpsuit with black heels. Prince Charles grabbed a dark blue pinstripe suit. Special detail: the blue tie with the little cloud print, which he wore over his light-colored shirt.

Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla opened the Commonwealth Games for the first time. So far, Queen Elizabeth II (96), who is also the patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), has taken on the task. A week ago, it was announced on Instagram, among other things, that she would represent this year.

The Queen is expected to remain at her Scottish residence, Balmoral, during the Games, where she traditionally spends her summer holidays. The 96-year-old is said to have arrived there last week. In recent months, the Queen has had to cancel a number of appointments due to mobility issues.

The Commonwealth Games last until August 8th. 4,600 athletes from a total of 72 nations and countries take part in the games, which take place every four years.
