29 euros regionally, 49 euros nationwide: Giffey suggests a two-stage successor for a 9-euro ticket

Berlin's governing mayor Giffey wants to organize her own successor to the 9-euro ticket from October - and has ideas for the nationwide implementation of the coalition decision. The upper limit should be a little higher for the coalition partner. The Pro Bahn passenger association wants further steps.

According to Berlin's Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey, a time-limited regional follow-up offer for the 9-euro ticket for the capital is taking shape. "We are working on a good bridging solution in Berlin from October to December 2022, until the nationwide ticket comes," tweeted the SPD state chairman.

The 9-euro ticket was available for three months until the end of August. The traffic light coalition in the federal government has agreed on a successor as part of the third relief package. The nationwide valid public transport ticket should be available for a price of 49 to 69 euros per month.

Giffey spoke out in favor of two ticket variants: "There should be a two-stage ticket system for a good connection solution to the 9-euro ticket: 29 euros for a regional offer in the respective federal state and 49 euros for a nationwide ticket."

Berlin's Senator for Transport, Bettina Jarasch, also advocated double-tracking the successor to the 9-euro ticket on Monday. "A 69-euro ticket alone would not do much for Berlin, because many subscriptions are already cheaper here," said the Green politician. "I think a tiered system is good, as the Greens in the federal government had already suggested: a regional ticket for 29 euros in the VBB area - and an additional nationwide 69-euro ticket."

The Pro Bahn passenger association also appreciates a multi-stage variant of the local transport ticket. The association is for three to four price levels - such as a city or district ticket for 29 euros, a regional ticket for 39 euros, a ticket for one or more federal states for 49 euros and a nationwide 69-euro ticket, said Pro-Bahn- Spokesman Karl-Peter Naumann of the editorial network Germany. In addition, for low-income people, there must be tickets financed from the social budget, the price level of which is much lower, emphasized Naumann. "For low-income families, there must also be a family ticket."
