Against "fossil capitalism": climate demonstrators paralyze the port of Hamburg

The demonstrators say that the port of Hamburg stands for the plundering of resources in the Global South. They block the track system and - in their own words - also "fossil capitalism".

About 400 climate demonstrators paralyzed the port of Hamburg. They have been occupying the only railway line to the container terminal since midday, according to the "Ende Gelände" action alliance. The activists had previously broken out of a demonstration and had gone to the railway tracks, it said.

"Today we are blocking fossil capitalism," said Charly Dietz, spokeswoman for "Ende Gelände". The Port of Hamburg stands for the plundering of resources in the Global South and the unfair distribution of wealth. "The big climate killer corporations make billions in profits from the colonial appropriation of fossil raw materials. With our protest, we are scandalizing this climate crime and will prevent the expansion of further fossil infrastructure," she explained.

"Coal from Colombia is blood coal," said Luka Scott, also a spokeswoman for "Ende Gelände". The port of Hamburg benefits from colonial exploitation and racist supply chains. Social justice can only be achieved if capitalism is overcome.

The port blockade is taking place as part of the "System Change Camp" action days by "Ende Gelände" in Hamburg, which will last until Monday. Also involved is the alliance "... Ums the whole".
