The Chancellor does not want to discuss the possible delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine. Poland does - and that's not all: a decision by the alliance partners at the Munich Security Conference in mid-February would be desirable, says the country's ambassador.
On the issue of fighter jet deliveries to Ukraine, Poland's ambassador in Berlin has called for a decision at the Munich Security Conference. "We proposed that the heads of state and government meeting there not only discuss this issue, but also make a decision," Ambassador Dariusz Pawlos told the editorial network Germany (RND). A policy of hesitation and procrastination, as in the case of the delivery of battle tanks to Ukraine, is counterproductive.
After Germany's commitment to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also called for fighter planes, "long-range missiles" and more artillery to defend against Russia. Poland had put considerable pressure on Germany in the discussion about the supply of main battle tanks.
SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich emphasized on Sunday evening in the ARD program "Report from Berlin": "The red line is of course that weapons are delivered that can also have a strong impact on Russian territory." Chancellor Olaf Scholz refuses to supply fighter jets to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Poland's government has made it clear that it would support NATO if it decides to supply fighter jets to Ukraine. "As far as the question of combat aircraft is concerned, Poland does not want to go it alone, but we think this decision should be taken by the Western allies by consensus," emphasized Ambassador Pawlos.
The Munich Security Conference, the world's most important meeting of experts on security policy, will take place from February 17th to 19th at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. It is the first security conference since Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine began. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov - or possibly his successor - are expected in Munich from the Ukraine.
