Nuclear weapons tests are also conceivable: Putin: Russia suspends "New Start" nuclear disarmament treaty

Russia continues to distance itself from the West: President Putin has now announced that he intends to put the nuclear disarmament treaty with the USA on hold. Among other things, this limited the nuclear arsenals of both countries to a certain number of operational warheads.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the suspension of the last major nuclear disarmament treaty with the United States. In his State of the Union address, the Kremlin chief said it was not an exit, but a suspension of the "New Start" treaty. He called on the Russian authorities to "stand by for nuclear weapons tests" if Washington were to conduct such tests first.

The "New Start" disarmament treaty limits the nuclear arsenals of both countries to 800 delivery systems and 1,550 operational warheads each. In addition, it is regulated that Washington and Moscow can exchange information about their strategic nuclear arsenals and hold up to 18 verification visits per year.
