Scholz pledges help to Ukraine: "There must first be a moment for the prospect of peace"

Germany will continue to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia. The country can rely on that, says Chancellor Scholz. He urgently warned China against aid to Moscow. You will not accept that.

Almost a year after the start of the Russian war of aggression, Chancellor Olaf Scholz assured Ukraine of continued support from Germany, but at the same time turned against discussions about the delivery of fighter jets. "We will not let up in our support," said Scholz on the ZDF program "Maybrit Illner", which is to be broadcast in the evening. Ukraine can rest assured that "we will help her for as long as it is necessary." At the same time, everything will be done to avoid an escalation.

Scholz said of fighter jets: "This is a debate that really makes no sense at all for what is happening right now." One should focus on what is currently needed to support Ukraine. Scholz does not see the prospect of peace in the near future: "The moment that opens up a perspective for peace must first arise." At the moment it must be said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is continuing the aggression unabated. "At some point he has to understand that he will not get through in the end," Scholz demanded.

However, the Chancellor expressly opposed the use of the weapons delivered to Ukraine on Russian territory. This would be "not very wise," warned the SPD politician. It was also agreed that this should not happen. He warned China not to sell arms to Russia. "In my last conversation with representatives of China, I also clearly said that this cannot be accepted," said Scholz. The Chancellor was irritated by Poland's criticism of Germany's determination to help Ukraine: "Germany doesn't have to listen to anyone's reproaches at this point, because we're the ones who do a lot."

With a view to the restructuring of the energy sector, Scholz emphasized that Germany would further strengthen the possibilities for importing liquid gas. "We will continue to ensure that our import infrastructure is improved," he emphasized. "So that hasn't stopped now, but remains the task of this year and next." At the same time, renewable energies would be expanded. In the future, a "Germany speed" must apply, as was the case with the construction of the liquid gas terminals. In view of falling energy prices, Scholz warned suppliers against exploiting the situation for their own profits. "It would be completely immoral if that happened," said Scholz. The Cartel Office will carry out its task.

Regarding the recent dispute over budgetary policy between Finance Minister Christian Lindner and Economics Minister Robert Habeck, Scholz emphasized that he was someone who "does not comment on everything every day". "But I'm certainly not surprised if there are a few noises every now and then when you're working so much." The coalition wrote what it intends to do in the coalition agreement. "That's what I orientate myself as chancellor." This also includes an agreement on budgetary policy, tax policy and many important social projects. "We will move along the understanding that we have with each other," announced Scholz.
