FC Bayern is easy on Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the top game of the Bundesliga, the record champions are trailing behind for a long time. Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer clarifies almost everything that flies in his direction. But then the pressure from Munich becomes too great, and they still drop points for the first time.
Bayern Munich has let its feared opponent steal points again. The German football record champions did not get past Borussia Mönchengladbach in the "eternal" classic despite the overwhelming superiority of a 1: 1 (0: 1). Bayern failed again and again due to the outstanding guest goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who almost drove the Munich top stars to despair with a number of saves - only Leroy Sané (83rd) used one of the many great opportunities.
Munich, who previously set a starting record with three wins and 15-1 goals, still remain leaders in the Bundesliga. But at least the concern of the competition that the champion could plow through the first months of the season without losing points is over for the time being. Gladbach had surprisingly taken the lead with Marcus Thuram's first chance to score in the 43rd minute with the supposedly unstoppable favorite: Dayot Upamecano had made a serious mistake in front of 75,000 spectators. Sané met late on submission by substitute Jamal Musiala.
"Here you need a goalkeeper who sometimes holds the unsustainable things. That was world class," said Gladbach's sports director Roland Virkus on Sky. "That's the only way you can score here. Everyone really threw everything in. And we were a bit lucky too."
Nagelsmann was spoiled for choice and chose Kingsley Coman and Sané instead of Musiala and Serge Gnabry in the starting XI. In contrast to the 7-0 win in Bochum, Alphonso Davies also replaced Matthijs de Ligt in defence. Nagelsmann emphasized before the game that he could assure "that our players are not afraid of any opponent". And Bayern got going with determination. After just a few seconds, Upamecano forced Gladbach keeper Sommer to make a brilliant save. The Munich team remained overwhelmingly superior, but initially found hardly any gaps.
There was still excitement after a good quarter of an hour when three climate activists stormed the field and tried to tie themselves to the goalposts. They were led out of the stadium by stewards. The short break didn't change the course of the game. Gladbach, who defended passionately, could hardly breathe. Sane, who had been conspicuous until then, had the best chance for Bayern, whose volley just missed the target (30').
So the Gladbach leadership fell out of nowhere. Upamecano was the last man to frivolously fritter away the ball. Thuram didn't let the gift slip away after a solo. After the change, the Bayern fans set off fireworks, which is why there was another short break. On the other hand, there were no fireworks on the pitch: Bayern only became really dangerous after an hour, when first Sadio Mané failed twice free-standing to Sommer, followed shortly afterwards by Sané.
Nagelsmann reacted and brought Musiala and Gnabry (68th). Angry attacks from the hosts followed. But Gnabry, Thomas Müller and Benjamin Pavard also found their match in Sommer. Only Sané broke the spell. In added time, Sommer made another spectacular save against de Ligt.
