First reality TV, then mega fight: Conor McGregor teases cage comeback

His last fight in the cage ended fatally for Conor McGregor: The Irishman broke his leg in July 2021. Since then fans have been waiting for the return of the MMA superstar. This year it should actually be so far.

Sometimes there are only moments or a few posts on social media for Conor McGregor between his comeback and the end of his career. With his recent post on Instagram, the Irish MMA superstar teased his return to the cage. Two years after the now 34-year-old broke his leg in a fight with Dustin Poirier. His octagon comeback is to be tied to a popular reality TV format.

"The Notorious" posted a photo on Instagram from 2015, which was taken shortly before his role as a coach on the TV show "The Ultimate Fighter". McGregor writes that he was offered this function again. "The smartest suits and shrillest screams the show had ever seen. And I coached my team to victory. Crazy. What a journey," he continues. He likes the offer to take part in the show again. "It's full immersion. I see the fighters lining up. I know what's coming, I'm ready."

"The Ultimate Fighter" is a popular TV show in which two prominent UFC stars each coach a team of unknown fighters who compete for a UFC contract themselves in a tournament mode. Those involved are all housed in a house in Las Vegas - which has caused friction in the past. Typically, after the show, the coaches compete against each other at a UFC event.

McGregor's rival coach - and thus a possible opponent - seems to have already been found. A few hours after the Irishman, UFC fighter Tony Ferguson posted that he had also been offered the coaching role on the show. Rather. He was allowed to choose his opposing coach. Since Khabib Nurmagomedov is no longer active, the choice fell on the Irishman. "I vote for you McKnacker," Ferguson wrote, linking McGregor.

The duel is quite explosive, because even if the two never faced each other directly in the cage, they have not spared verbal attacks in recent years. In addition, both are eccentric fighters and fan favorites, which would guarantee the UFC high ratings for the show - and of course corresponding pay-per-view revenue if you duel in the octagon.

The statements by John Kavanagh, the Irish fighter's trainer, also speak in favor of a cage return this year. He would bet his house that McGregor would get back in the cage in 2023. At the same time, the Irish sports star has to deal with new assault allegations: he is accused by a woman of assaulting and threatening her during a yacht party for his 34th birthday in July 2022.
