SGE wins after seven goals: After Götze's debut goal, Werder's power comes too late

Mario Götze scores for Eintracht Frankfurt for the first time early on, but Werder Bremen strikes back twice. The Europa League winner, however, avoided the fate of Borussia Dortmund and turned the game around again. A late penalty makes added time exciting again.

Seven-goal spectacle, first win of the season - and Mario Götze as the goal scorer in the leading role: Led by the former world champion, Eintracht Frankfurt has stopped the rise of the newly promoted Werder Bremen for the time being. On coach Oliver Glasner's 48th birthday, Götze paved the way for Eintracht with his first Bundesliga goal in 982 days to a 4-3 (3-2) win in Bremen - the first Frankfurt treble of the current season.

Eight days after the sensational last-minute triumph at Borussia Dortmund (3-2), Werder's madness continued seamlessly in the Weser Stadium - this time, however, Bremen played the supporting role. Favored by some hair-raising mistakes in the Bremen defense, the Europa League winner from Frankfurt clearly showed the league returnee the limits - and added the home side to the first defeat of the season.

Götze (2nd) opened the scoring in front of 41,000 spectators in the sold-out Weser Stadium with his first competitive goal for Eintracht in the second minute. In addition, Randal Kolo Muani (32'), Jesper Lindström (39') and Djibril Sow (48') scored for the guests. Even the 1:2 deficit caused by Bremen's Anthony Jung (14th) and Leonardo Bittencourt (17th) didn't bother Götze and Co. Niclas Füllkrug shortened the penalty kick after video evidence (90. 2).

It took less than 120 seconds for the Frankfurters to prove their qualities for the first time. Götze scored with a low shot from 18 meters, it was his first Bundesliga goal since December 20, 2019 - at that time he scored in the Borussia Dortmund jersey against Hoffenheim. Eintracht acted dominantly in the following minutes and set the pace and rhythm of the game.

But Werder didn't let the guests' lightning start upset them and hit back twice with their first two chances. First, the long-time Eintracht youth player Jung used Evan Ndicka's defense that was too short to equalize by taking a direct shot from the edge of the penalty area, three minutes later the 1.70 meter tall Bittencourt national keeper Kevin Trapp duped with a header arc lamp - and temporarily adjusted the course of the game the head.

However, the glory of Bremen did not last long, Frankfurt simply marched on. A goal by Daichi Kamada was ruled out due to an offside position (19') and Lindström was saved by Bremen's goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka (27'). But then Kolo Muani played half the Werder defense dizzy on a counterattack before he pushed in to make it 2-2. Then Lindström escaped after great preliminary work from Sebastian Rode and this time won the duel with Pavlenka with a chip.

Bremen's hopes of a comeback similar to that of the previous week in Dortmund faded immediately after the restart when Sow made it 4-2 with a flick. Werder fought brilliantly and came back when referee Patrick Ittrich awarded a penalty after studying the video. In added time, several more attempts were unsuccessful.
