Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Only two sirens in Schwerin: No use on the warning day

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - On the nationwide warning day on December 8th, there will be no sirens in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's state capital, Schwerin. In the city, which has almost 100,000 inhabitants, there are only sirens at two locations and they are only used to alert the volunteer fire brigade, the city administration announced on Wednesday.

The city council decided in January to install sirens again to warn people in Schwerin. However, this project is "not yet complete". The fire brigade appealed to people to install the "Nina" warning app on their smartphones.

Warnings are to be issued across Germany at 11 a.m. next Wednesday at the same time via radio, city information boards and sirens. For the first time, a warning is to be sent to all mobile phones via "cell broadcast".
