Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Sales and orders in construction are recovering, the forecast is uncertain

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - According to the State Statistical Office of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the main construction trades recovered cautiously in the first half of the year from the previous year's low. According to statistics published by the Schwerin authorities on Tuesday, sales in the construction industry in the first six months were around 845 million euros, well above the previous year's figure of around 701 million euros. A clear recovery from the 701 million euros in the first half of the previous year was also observed in the volume of incoming orders at 776 million euros. In 2021, the supply chain problems in the wake of the global pandemic had led to a particular burden.

But despite this positive development, the statisticians remain cautious about further developments this year. According to one expert, it remains to be seen how the currently high energy prices and construction interest rates will affect demand and supply in the industry.

According to the data for the month of August, the improvement in sales and orders has initially continued. Compared to the same month last year, the order volume increased by 19.6 percent and sales by 2.6 percent - nominal and not price-adjusted for the inflation rate. In terms of earnings, building construction in particular has increased. Although almost half of the total turnover was generated by commercial construction projects in August, according to the statistics, this business area had to accept a significant drop of 12.5 percent. In contrast, public and residential construction increased by 14.2 and 17 percent respectively.
