Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: State wants to centralize approval procedures for wind power

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to speed up the approval process for wind turbines. "At the moment, approval procedures are simply taking too long. We have to change that if we are serious about the energy transition," said Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) on Tuesday in Schwerin. A corresponding draft law by the ministry was therefore discussed at today's cabinet meeting.

In order to simplify the processes, according to the draft, the test procedures for nature and species protection should be relocated from the districts to the state offices for agriculture and the environment. "In this way, we ensure that the applications are processed more stringently without making technical compromises," says Backhaus. In order to carry out the additional tasks, he wants to strengthen the authorities with 15 staff positions.

The Environment Minister hopes that the law will be passed by the state parliament this year and will come into force at the beginning of 2023.
