North Rhine-Westphalia: Man admits killing his wife: "We were always happy"

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A father has confessed to having stabbed his wife and mother of his three children to death. The security guard made a confession at the beginning of the trial on Tuesday at the Düsseldorf district court. The 52-year-old German is charged with manslaughter. "I killed the mother of my three sons - and we were always happy," the defendant said through his defense attorney. He stabbed his wife more than ten times.

The 48-year-old was killed half a year ago in Korschenbroich on the Lower Rhine. The background to the deadly argument was probably jealousy. According to his own statement, the accused had discovered WhatsApp messages from a man he did not know on his wife's phone when he had secretly checked it. He had become suspicious because his wife had recently spent so much time on the cell phone.

He then dialed the unknown number: "It was a man's turn. I told him to leave my wife alone." The person called just hung up. On the day of the crime, he found his wife's second cell phone in the bathroom.

When he confronted the 48-year-old in the kitchen, an argument broke out. She approached him with a kitchen knife and asked him to give her the cell phone. He accused her: "You betrayed me." He then snatched the knife from his wife and stabbed her several times. According to the indictment, more than ten puncture wounds were found on her body.

"Why did you do that after all these years?" his wife asked him. After the fact, he tried to cut his wrists, but couldn't: "The children shouldn't be without a father." The couple had met 25 years earlier. She was most recently a nursing supervisor. Three more days of negotiations are scheduled for the trial until March 28th.
