The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has asked the Government to a super-reduced 4% VAT for organic products, in order to promote "more ethical and sustainable" consumption, while favoring biodiversity.
To support this demand , wields that at present these products cost three times more than their white label , ie 216% , and nearly twice that of the leading brand , according to a comparative study of 24 families it has developed in the sectors of food and drugstore .
According to reports on a press release, the results of this report reveal that the greatest price differences are given in hygiene and personal care products, such as shower gels and pill soaps, but also in some feeding as yoghurts or rice.
To promote sustainable consumption, this consumer organization asks for a super-reduced VAT for ecological products, whenever they understand that these favor biodiversity, limit the pollution of rivers and aquifers with fertilizers and pesticides, while promoting local employment , among many other benefits. "Sustainability is a must, not a luxury," he emphasizes.
It also requests a new European labeling of sustainability that indicates the degree of ecological, social and economic commitment of each product, and insists on the need to promote information and education actions that help combat climate change, as it is collected in the Campaign "Change the green".
On the other hand, the OCU encourages consumers to modify some of their purchase habits in favor of more sustainable consumption and, for this, it advises prioritizing local and closeness products; Choose seasonal products; Reduce the consumption of meat and dairy, and avoid overenges in favor of bulk products.
It also recommends, as far as each possibilities of each, try to acquire ecological products, especially those that are not much more expensive than their equivalents, such as detergents and cleaning products.
