The team announced that Jimmy Williams, a former cornerback for the 49ers, has died. Williams was 43 years old.

The team posted on social media that "The 49ers mourn Jimmy Williams' passing." Our organization extends condolences for his wife Chandra and his entire Williams family.

Williams was a Vanderbilt running back who later switched to cornerback. He was selected by the Bills in the sixth round in 2001, but he has never played in Buffalo.

He settled in San Francisco where he played for four seasons.

Williams played two more years with the Seahawks, and was a captain of the team during the 2005 Super Bowl XL campaign. The campaign ended in a defeat to the Steelers.

In his six-year NFL career, he appeared in 80 games, seven of them as a starter. He had 151 tackles and three interceptions.

The NFL's core special-teams player was the best with 16.8 yards per punt return in 2002. Williams only had one touchdown return in his career.

After the 2006 season, he retired and returned to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he was involved in his high school's football program.

Williams was the defensive coordinator and assistant athletic directors at Episcopal School of Baton Rouge. He was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2006.
