Baden-Württemberg: Experts expect rising groundwater levels

Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) - Although November was the fourth rainy month in a row in the south-west, slightly below-average groundwater conditions prevailed at the beginning of December. Experts from the Baden-Württemberg State Institute for the Environment (LUBW) in Karlsruhe assume that these will increase in the coming weeks. "Based on the current observations, large-scale bottlenecks in the water supply are not the order of the day," says the report "Groundwater Levels and Spring Discharges" published on Friday.

In most parts of the country and especially in the Upper Rhine Graben, the LUBW recorded significant increases in November after a very dry summer. "In other regions, for example in Upper Swabia and in parts of the Neckar basin, recovery is still a long time coming." In a year-to-year comparison, the groundwater reserves correspond approximately to the situation in November 2021.

Because of the high soil moisture, the starting position is very good, so that groundwater can form again, the experts explained. This also applies to areas that have not yet recovered.
