Baden-Württemberg: FPJ should take pressure off schools and advertise for teachers

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - With a so-called Voluntary Educational Year (FPJ), the pressure on schools should be reduced in the dispute over teacher shortages and the lack of young people. The commitment could relieve teachers and future teachers could be won, said Minister of Education Theresa Schopper on Monday. "We want to introduce a voluntary pedagogical year to give pupils and schools targeted support," explained the Greens politician. "It would be a good opportunity for many not only to experience school from the school desk, but also to help shape it 'from the other side'."

While young people do service in social institutions during the voluntary social year (FSJ), the FPJ should enable them to gain an insight into the teaching profession. First, the SWR had reported on the already announced planning of the country.

"We are currently developing various measures to support teachers and also to make the education system in Baden-Württemberg fairer," said a ministry spokesman. "We're confident that we can give the issue to the Council of Ministers in a timely manner so that we can then take the next steps." Funds for the project have been deposited in the draft for the 2023/2024 double budget.

According to a new study, the shortage of teachers in the southwest will become even more severe by 2035. According to an analysis by education scientist Klaus Klemm on behalf of the GEW education union, there will probably be a shortage of almost 17,000 teachers by then. If the country wants to achieve its goals for primary schools and the integration of disabled children and young people, significantly more teachers would have to be hired by 2035. According to Klemm's calculations, this increases the gap to a total of 27,000.
