Baden-Württemberg: Fridays for Future plans 40 protests in Baden-Württemberg

A worldwide strike is to be protested again against the destruction of the climate. Fridays for Future is also calling for demonstrations in Baden-Württemberg.

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - After protests against the demolition of the village of Lützerath and the excavation of lignite, the Fridays for Future organization is calling for new large climate demonstrations on Friday (March 3). In the southwest alone, the organization expects thousands to take part in demonstrations in more than 40 cities.

Under the motto "

According to the organizers, their protests are linked to ongoing collective bargaining in the public sector and a Germany-wide day of action by the Verdi union and local transport workers. "We need more public transport to fight climate change," said Jan Bleckert from Verdi Baden-Württemberg. According to Fridays for Future, the demonstrations are also supported by the Verkehrs Club Deutschland (VCD), the environmental protection associations BUND and Nabu and the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB).

Fridays for Future has called for global climate protests several times in the past. In September 2022, for example, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Germany.

Most recently, climate activists had mobilized demonstrators with protests against the demolition of Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia. The village, a district of Erkelenz west of Cologne, was cleared by the police and then excavated to get to the lignite underneath. RWE and the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia argue that this is urgently needed to maintain energy security. Environmental activists disagree.
