Baden-Württemberg: Health: Stuttgart Rivers no longer captain

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The American top player Krystal Rivers is handing over her captaincy in the Bundesliga volleyball team of MTV Allianz Stuttgart to the Spaniard Maria Segura Palleres for health reasons. The club announced on Monday. "Together with Krystal, we decided that she would concentrate fully on herself, her health and volleyball in the current season and that she would step down as captain," said sporting director Kim Oszvald-Renkema. "We want to try to ensure that Krystal can continue to play at the highest level for us for as long as possible and that we can celebrate further successes with her."

She has "reached a point where my health has caused me to reconsider my role on the team. I can no longer both fulfill my duties as captain and maintain the energy needed to perform at the highest level play," Rivers said. The 28-year-old diagonal attacker was born with tethered spinal cord syndrome and had to endure numerous options growing up. In 2014 she was diagnosed with cancer.
