Baden-Württemberg: Primary school recommendation is being followed less and less by parents

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - More and more parents are deciding against the proposal of primary school teachers to transfer their children to a secondary school. About every tenth child who switched from elementary school to high school last summer did not have the appropriate recommendation, as the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education announced on Tuesday in Stuttgart. The numbers have also risen slightly at the Werkreal and Hauptschulen as well as at the Realschulen. They should give further impetus to the debate about a binding recommendation for primary schools.

In the school year 2022/2023, around 92,073 pupils switched to a secondary school in Baden-Württemberg. For example, 45 percent of these boys and girls and their parents had opted for high school (plus 0.9 percentage points). However, only 89.3 percent of them brought the recommendation for this type of secondary school (previous year: 90.6 percent). From the point of view of the teachers, 1.1 percent should have attended the secondary school or secondary school (previous year: 0.9), 9.6 percent the secondary school (previous year: 8.5).

Most recently, the FDP had fueled the debate about a binding recommendation when a child transitions to a secondary school. High school and junior high school teachers know they are on their side when it comes to this topic. However, the SPD and the Greens are against it, the CDU joined the coalition partner, but shows a basic willingness to talk.

In Baden-Württemberg, the primary school makes a recommendation as to which type of secondary school is suitable for a child after the 4th grade. It is issued at the beginning of the 2nd half of the 4th grade together with the half-year reports and is usually based on their grades.
