Riedlingen (dpa / lsw) - Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) enjoyed a special breakfast on Shrove Tuesday: the fools' guild Gole again served up frog tripe in the Riedlingen town hall (Biberach district). "We Swabians say you can eat it," said the politician with a wink.
After a virtual frog tripe meal and a cancellation last year, Kretschmann was again a regular at the traditional event, which, according to the fools, was taking place for the 192nd time. "It's a great tradition, you always meet the same people, you know the songs that are being sung. It's a feeling of home," said the Prime Minister.
More than 300 plates went over the counter this time. And despite the tradition, there was a premiere: a new butcher is preparing the traditional dish. However, the Prime Minister did not want to allow himself a judgment on this. "The first time you don't really know."
The dish has nothing to do with amphibians. The frog tripe consists of beef offal and a special spice mixture. According to legend, the name goes back to the fact that Riedlingen on the Danube sees itself as a stork town and the storks' favorite food is frogs.
