Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Country commemorates the beginning of the war in Ukraine

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - With a service and a ceremonial laying of a wreath on Friday, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania commemorates the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine a year ago and commemorates the thousands of victims. As the Ministry of Social Affairs announced on Tuesday, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and Minister of Social Affairs Stefanie Drese (both SPD) are taking part in the memorial event in Schwerin on behalf of the state government. This is organized jointly by the state integration officer Jana Michael and the state network Nord Haus UA. A priest from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Schwerin will lead the service in the forest cemetery.

On February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded Ukraine, beginning the illegal war against the neighboring country. Shortly thereafter, Schwesig was criticized because she had always maintained close contacts with Russia. In addition, despite all the warnings, she had campaigned massively for the construction of the controversial Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline.
