Baden-Württemberg: Steinmeier speaks to Ukrainian refugees in a synagogue

Rottweil (dpa/lsw) - Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke to refugees from Ukraine in a Jewish synagogue in Rottweil on Tuesday. "We are all witnesses to Russia's brutal attack on Ukraine," he said Tuesday in the prayer room to a Jewish family who had fled Kyiv and found refuge in Rottweil. "It makes me incredibly sad that you had to leave your home country of Ukraine."

Steinmeier will stay in the oldest city in Baden-Württemberg until Thursday. He also does his official business here on an hourly basis. At noon he was received by Mayor Ralf Broß (independent) in front of the Black Gate, which is known for the Rottweiler jump. Many people took the opportunity to take photos with the head of state.

After his arrival, the distinguished guest first signed the city's golden book. Then he walked to the Jewish synagogue. In the afternoon it was to go to the Rottweiler test tower for high-speed elevators, where a conversation with citizens was planned on the visitor platform.

After Altenburg (Thuringia) and Quedlinburg (Saxony-Anhalt), Rottweil is the third station in the "Local Time" series, which is intended to mark the second term of office of the Federal President. "Local time means that I am at irregular intervals for three days at my office outside of Berlin," explained Steinmeier. The goal is to get in touch with people.
