Baden-Württemberg: Wolf caught in a photo trap in Dettenheim

Dettenheim (dpa / lsw) - A wolf has been detected in the Karlsruhe district. The animal got caught in a photo trap near Dettenheim, the Ministry of the Environment announced on Friday in Stuttgart. After the picture was taken on Monday, experts from the Forestry Experimental and Research Institute first assessed the recording. On Friday, they confirmed that the animal is clearly a wolf. The sex of the animal was not yet known.

A wolf was last detected in the Karlsruhe district in March 2022. "Otherwise no wolf has been detected in the Rhine plain near Karlsruhe," the authority said.

The municipality of Dettenheim is not in the so-called Black Forest wolf prevention support area. There, keepers of sheep, goats and game animals are expected to adequately secure their pastures against wolf attacks. If an animal is killed, the costs are usually reimbursed. According to the ministry, there is also compensation in regions that are not in the development area.

In Baden-Württemberg, three wolves are currently still considered sedentary, they are all males in the Black Forest. Two of them roam the south of the region. A wolf is considered sedentary if a clearly assignable proof is still found after six months.
