Munich/Hohenpeissenberg (dpa/lby) - The Christmas tree for the Munich Christmas market fell on private property in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau on Wednesday. The 50-year-old Siberian silver fir comes from the Schaan family in Hohenpeissenberg. The conifer was loaded onto a transporter with a crane. He should arrive in the state capital on Thursday.

"I have mixed feelings. I've known the tree since I was a child," said Daniela Schaan, whose father once planted the 25-meter-tall fir tree. "But on the other hand, we're of course very happy to be given such a great honor," she said.

According to her, the tree should have been removed anyway because of a power line. A replacement tree will be planted in the spring.

The Christmas market on Marienplatz will open on November 21st. The district from which the tree comes is traditionally allowed to present itself at the market with a stand.
