Bavaria: Bahn presents results for the second S-Bahn trunk line

Munich (dpa / lby) - The debate about years of delays and massive cost increases in the construction of the second S-Bahn trunk line could now be clarified. Bahn boss Richard Lutz is expected to speak at the State Chancellery in Munich today. The state government hopes that Deutsche Bahn will finally present concrete figures and data on the mammoth project, the cost of which is now estimated at up to 7.8 billion euros instead of 3.85 billion euros. The forecast date for completion could also be delayed by a good nine years to 2037.

In addition to Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) and Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger (free voters) want to be present at the meeting. Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) canceled his participation. "Since the current documents from Deutsche Bahn have still not been made available to us as a city, I don't think it makes sense to take part in the meeting on Thursday without a technical basis," said Reiter.

The heart of the construction project is a second S-Bahn tube through downtown Munich. It is intended to equalize the traffic on the extremely busy route and is part of an overall concept for rail traffic in the greater Munich area. The railway has not yet given any precise information on the costs. She only said in the summer that it would be more expensive and take longer and referred to studies whose results will be presented in the fall.
