"With Benedict XVI, a really great one has left this world - a great theologian, a great Bavarian and a friendly person with a big heart who trusted in the good in people," wrote Governor Martin Haberfellner.
The mountain riflemen had lost a friend. "Benedict XVI has given us many valuable encounters, his attention and appreciative words, which have strengthened the reputation of the Bavarian Mountain Riflemen not only nationally but also internationally." Benedict XVI always knew about his roots, he openly showed his "Bavarian nature" and lived it happily.
The mountain riflemen, who have set themselves the task of preserving customs and traditions and celebrate their patron saint's day every year in honor of the Mother of God as patroness, were always closely connected to the former pontiff. A delegation visited him on his 95th birthday last April at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican.
