Bavaria: Deputy Vogel now leads the CSU Lower Franconia

Theres (dpa / lby) - After almost exactly eleven years, the CSU district association in Lower Franconia has a new chairman: the district party conference in Theres (Haßberge district) elected state parliamentarian Steffen Vogel to succeed Gerhard Eck on Friday evening.

The 48-year-old Vogel prevailed in the vote with 77 to 73 votes against the member of the state parliament and secretary of state for the interior, Sandro Kirchner. The father of three has been a member of the state parliament since 2013 and a member of the health and economy committees.

The result of the vote can certainly be seen as a surprise, since Kirchner was only brought into the cabinet a few months ago by party leader and Prime Minister Markus Söder. He took over the post of State Secretary from Eck and now wanted to follow him at the head of the district association.

Eck had announced in the spring that he no longer wanted to run for the CSU in the state elections next year. To date, Eck has been State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior for more than twelve years.
