Bavaria: high season for crib builders: Garmischer teaches crafts

Garmisch-Partenkirchen (dpa / lby) - Before Christmas, Martin Königsdorfer has high season. He is a master crib builder and teaches the traditional craft at the school for wood and design in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Professionals and hobby nativity set builders learn from him. In addition to handling the material, landscape design, architecture and lighting technology are on the curriculum. Before the "start of construction" is precisely planned and drawn.

Interest has "unlikely" increased, says Königsdorfer. It's about the feeling of creating something with your own hands. "In addition, the Christmas season is an affair of the heart."

Königsdorfer roughly divided them into native and oriental styles: nativity scenes in a wintry or autumnal mood or with olive trees and date palms.

Wall cribs are available for those who don't have much space. With these cribs, Königsdorfer specializes primarily in miniatures - some of the figures are only three centimeters tall. In the other cribs they are ten centimeters to half a meter tall.

The crèche season does not necessarily end after Christmas. There are, among other things, Passion nativity scenes with the story of Holy Week. And in the summer, the preparations for the next season begin with collecting and preparing moss, roots and bark so that things can get going again quickly in the autumn. He already has orders for the next three years, says Königsdorfer, who, in addition to teaching, also makes cribs himself.
