Bavaria: New name for Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße in Munich?

In Würzburg, a square named after Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber has been renamed because of his role in National Socialism. There is also a Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse in Munich. Will she also have a new name soon?

Munich (dpa / lby) - After the decision to rename the Kardinal-Faulhaber-Platz in Würzburg, something similar could follow in Munich. The street in downtown Munich, named after the former Archbishop of Munich and Freising, is on a list of "street names with an increased need for discussion," said the Munich Department of Culture on request. However, there is no timetable for a possible renaming of Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße.

The city of Würzburg decided last week to rename Kardinal-Faulhaber-Platz in the old town because of Faulhaber's role in National Socialism. One deals "seriously with one's past" and assumes political responsibility, according to a press release from the city. The decision was preceded by a year-long public discussion.

Michael von Faulhaber was Archbishop of Munich and Freising for 35 years. As such, he consecrated in 1951 the later Pope Benedict XVI. to the priest. According to the Archdiocese of Munich, opponents referred to Faulhaber's critical attitude towards Weimar democracy and his reluctance to make public statements about the persecution of Jews as early as 20 years ago.

According to the culture department, a panel of experts in Munich has been checking historically charged street names since 2019. The committee includes representatives of memorial institutions, specialist departments and the parliamentary groups represented in Munich City Council - including the NS Documentation Center, the Jewish Museum and the Office for Intercultural Work.
