Bavaria: Weinzierl reveals attractive job offers to Schalke-Aus

Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - After leaving FC Schalke 04 in 2017, coach Markus Weinzierl said he had two attractive job offers. As the current coach of 1. FC Nürnberg revealed in a podcast of the second division soccer team, he refused a job at VfL Wolfsburg. He could also have become Austria's national coach. His then three-year contract with Schalke was "not to be dissolved in harmony".

Weinzierl switched to Schalke in the summer of 2016 after almost four years at SSV Jahn Regensburg and another four successful years at FC Augsburg, but had to leave a year later. "I shouldn't have done anything for myself for a year so that I could reflect for myself and not always rush from one thing to the next," said Weinzierl about his commitment to Schalke.

"Schalke 04 have a brutal force," remarked the 47-year-old. "In retrospect, it was an okay year, but okay isn't enough." Weinzierl was only tenth in the Bundesliga with Schalke in 2016/17, in the DFB Cup and in the Europa League he ended up in the quarter-finals. Weinzierl has been a coach in Nuremberg since October.
