Eight-hour operation: U2 singer Bono reports on severe heart surgery

U2 singer Bono will soon present his autobiography on a reading tour. He describes one chapter in advance: Six years ago, he underwent a serious heart operation. He's been taking it easy since then, he says. At the end of November he will also be reading from his memoirs in Germany.

Bono has written his autobiography entitled Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. The work will appear in stores on November 1st. A life-threatening medical episode of the U2 singer became known in advance. On Christmas 2016, Bono, whose real name is Paul David Hewson, underwent eight-hour heart surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. In an interview with "Welt am Sonntag" he said: "After that I thought: 'Phew, this time I almost didn't wake up'".

The operation had become necessary because a blister had formed in Bono's aorta. His chest was opened. The doctor who treated him later explained that he "needed extra strong threads" to sew Bono up again. Since then, according to the 62-year-old, he wants to "take things slower" and enjoy "the smell of coffee" for as long as he can.

"I feel fitter today than I did 25 years ago. I feel like I got my body back. I'm determined to respect it more in the future," he said.

Bono will go on a reading tour with his memoirs. "Stories of Surrender - an evening of words, music and some mischief" starts on November 2nd in New York. On November 23, the U2 singer will stop in Berlin for a reading.
