Hesse: Airport tests autonomous luggage vehicle on the apron

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - Frankfurt Airport is testing an autonomous luggage vehicle on the apron. The electrically powered tractor is to be driven on an eight-kilometer test track under various conditions, as the operating company Fraport announced on Tuesday. This includes driving in the open air and in the baggage hall where other vehicles and people are traveling.

The maximum speed given is 13 km/h. For safety reasons, a specially trained safety driver is always on board, who can intervene at any time in the event of unplanned situations. The test phase should run until the end of March. In the future, autonomous vehicles could replace airport staff.
