Hesse: corruption affair about cleaning schools: charges brought

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - Two charges have been brought in the corruption scandal surrounding the cleaning of Frankfurt schools. The 50-year-old managing director of a building cleaning company was accused of commercial bribery, the Frankfurt public prosecutor announced on Tuesday. In 28 cases, he is said to have bribed a 44-year-old who had been responsible for organizing and coordinating school cleaning at the city of Frankfurt since September 2018. This man has now been charged with commercial and continued bribery.

According to the information, the consideration consisted of cash, benefits in kind and services such as renovation work worth almost 147,000 euros. The cleaning company is said to have earned around 650,000 euros. The 44-year-old is accused of a total of 37 cases between April 2019 and April 2021. He is also said to have accepted money from another company whose manager is also being prosecuted. The two companies would have received about 90 percent of the order volume in Frankfurt school buildings.

A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor said that numerous caretakers were also being investigated. At the end of June, the offices and apartments of 17 caretakers at 16 Frankfurt schools were searched on suspicion of corruption. They are also said to have accepted money from a cleaning company.
