Hesse: Fragments of a Torah ark are said to be in the Frankfurt synagogue

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - The fragments of a Torah ark destroyed in 1938 are to be integrated into a Frankfurt synagogue. The preserved parts are to move to the 75th anniversary of the reestablishment of the Jewish community in Frankfurt am Main in 2023/24, as the Jewish community reported on Wednesday.

The Torah ark comes from the synagogue on Börneplatz, which was destroyed by arson on November 10, 1938. The fragments of the "Aron haKodesch" of the orthodox synagogue were discovered in 1987 during excavations for the new building of the Frankfurt municipal works. Since then they have been shown in several exhibitions.

Now the Jewish community in Frankfurt wants to integrate the parts into the Westend synagogue in the district of the same name. "The aim is that the fragments should find their new place in the "Shtibl", a small prayer room in the Westend Synagogue," the community said. In an ideas competition, selected artists should make suggestions.
