Hesse: women travel with a lot of gold jewelry - customs intervene

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - With plenty of gold jewelry, two women got into trouble with customs during controls at the long-distance train station at Frankfurt Airport. The two women entered the country from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan with jewelry with a total value of around 39,000 euros, a customs spokesman reported on Friday.

After proper registration, the women would have had to pay more than 8,600 euros in customs duty for the import of the valuable jewellery. However, the jewellery, including 18 bracelets, five necklaces, four pairs of earrings and a ring, had not been declared to customs. Criminal tax proceedings were therefore initiated against each of the women for suspected tax evasion.

When entering from non-EU countries, travelers may import goods valued at up to 430 euros duty-free. If the value is higher, they must be declared to customs.
