In Bavaria, motorists refuel most expensively, in Berlin the cheapest

Bavaria currently has the highest fuel prices in Germany. A comparison of regional values published on Thursday by the Federal Cartel Office showed differences of up to 21 cents per liter of premium petrol for August 1st. The most expensive regions were in southern Bavaria, the cheapest in Berlin. In the case of diesel, there were differences of up to 19 cents with a clear gradient between south and north. Again, parts of Bavaria are the most expensive, while parts of Berlin are particularly cheap. There were also comparatively high prices in the south of Baden-Württemberg.

Even within Bavaria, there is a gap – according to this, fuel is most expensive in the south-east, while it is still cheapest in parts of Franconia. The lowest average values for individual regions were on August 1 for E5 premium petrol, according to a chart by the Cartel Office, at 1.73 to 1.74 euros per liter, the highest at 1.92 to 1.94. For diesel, it was 1.86 to 1.87 euros or 2.04 to 2.05 euros.

The Bundeskartellamt cites the low water level of the Rhine, which makes transport to Bavaria more difficult, as well as limited production capacities at refineries in Bavaria and Austria as possible reasons for the differences. As early as four years ago, high regional price differences could be observed in connection with a severe low water level in the Rhine and the failure of a refinery in Bavaria.

For the comparison, regions were formed based on the first two digits of the postal code. The Cartel Office did not name detailed individual values.
