Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 40 wildlife accidents in 26 hours in Western Pomerania and on the lake district

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - High activity among wild animals has led to numerous wildlife accidents in Western Pomerania and on the Mecklenburg Lake District. By Thursday morning there had been 40 accidents in the districts of Western Pomerania-Greifswald, Western Pomerania-Rügen and Mecklenburg Lake District within a good 26 hours, the Neubrandenburg police headquarters said. Dozens of dead deer, some dead deer and foxes were part of the balance sheet.

In the accidents, the drivers collided with their vehicles with wild animals or caused an accident when evading. The car was also damaged because they drove over dead game. Hunters assumed that the game was out and about at this time because of the weather and because of the search for food.

The collisions occurred primarily on small side streets, but also on main roads. Most accidents would have happened in the morning hours or late afternoon to late evening. According to the current status, drivers were not injured. The property damage amounts to around 51,000 euros.

The police are calling for caution, especially on routes where deer crossings are indicated. Drivers should not try to steer wildly to avoid animals, but brake, hold the steering wheel firmly, switch off the high beam and honk. Neither an injured nor a killed animal may be taken away. The police and hunters take care of the game. If the car is still drivable and there are no other people involved or injured, the driver can also drive to the next station. Before that, the police had to be informed about the accident.
