Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: FDP wants commission of inquiry on flight and migration

On Thursday, representatives of the federal, state and local governments will come together for the refugee summit in Berlin. The reason is the increasing problems of the districts and municipalities to accommodate the people. The FDP in the Schwerin state parliament wants to look further.

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Immediately before the refugee summit on Thursday in Berlin, FDP parliamentary group leader René Domke called for a commission of inquiry on flight and migration in the Schwerin state parliament. "Integration must no longer just take place on paper or be a big word about everything. State concepts are needed that finally give answers to the pressing questions and not more questions," explained Domke on Wednesday in Schwerin.

In the special commission, MPs from all parliamentary groups should look for viable solutions with representatives from the municipalities, experts and experts. "It must be about how we can deal with flight and immigration in the future, improve integration services, strengthen the rule of law and, above all, avoid being overwhelmed and overburdened," said Domke.

This also included incentives to quickly get migrants into self-employment. "You can do drumming, baking and singing together, but it's not the big hit for integration," emphasized the FDP politician. In addition, the impression should not be reinforced that the rule of law does not work because those who do not want to integrate, criminals or threats are not consistently deported.

Previously, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's CDU state and parliamentary group leader Franz-Robert Liskow had called for binding agreements between the federal and state governments at the refugee summit. On the one hand, the goal must be "to noticeably limit the influx of refugees". On the other hand, Liskow also warned that deportations should be implemented more consistently and that the legal provisions for this be tightened.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) wants to discuss migration policy in Germany on Thursday in Berlin with representatives of the Conference of Interior Ministers and the leading municipal associations.

The Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern called for quick help with accommodation, support and integration of all those seeking protection. "It's high time to bring everyone involved to the table and discuss how the tasks can be mastered together," said Friedrich Wilhelm Bluschke, head of the regional association. In addition to short-term solutions for the accommodation, long-term sustainable concepts with secure financing are also required.

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, around 5,000 asylum seekers came to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania last year, which was almost double the year before. According to the Interior Ministry, the country took in more than 22,000 refugees from Ukraine in 2022.

Districts and municipalities are increasingly facing problems with accommodation. There is currently massive resistance to the construction of a container settlement for 400 refugees in Upahl (Northwest Mecklenburg). The protests in the 500-strong town continue.
