Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Fighter jets from the Laage air base start night flights

It gets loud in places in the evening sky over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The fighter pilots of Air Force Squadron 73 "Steinhoff" practice flying at night in Rostock-Laage for almost a week.

Rostock-Laage (dpa/mv) - Air Force Squadron 73 "Steinhoff", stationed in Laage near Rostock, will begin night flight operations lasting several days on Monday. As the management of the air base announced, flight movements over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and thus also additional noise must be expected daily up to and including Thursday until 11 p.m. "Night flights are an essential part of pre-deployment pilot training and are necessary for acquiring and maintaining flight licenses," said a spokesman for the Air Force. But the flight movements would be limited to the necessary minimum.

As can be seen from the air base's website, the main task of Air Force Squadron 73 "Steinhoff" is to train all Eurofighter pilots of the German Air Force and the Austrian Armed Forces on the fighter jet. With the so-called alarm group, the squadron also regularly takes on tasks to secure the airspace in northern Germany, it is said.

According to the information, 35 Eurofighters are regularly stationed in Laage. In addition, there are 19 fighter jets from the sister association "Richthofen" from Wittmund in Lower Saxony, which are temporarily based in the north-east due to modernization work there. With the 240 soldiers from Wittmund, around 1150 Air Force members are now on duty in Laage.

At the end of July, fighter jets were transferred from the air base in Rostock-Laage to Estonia. As part of the NATO mission, which has been in existence for years, they are to ensure the aviation security of the Baltic states on the eastern flank of the military alliance. The four Eurofighters belong to Squadron 71 "Richthofen".
