Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: GEW calls for more staff for day care centers and schools

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The Education and Science Union (GEW) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania sees an essential key to better school performance in early childhood education. To do this, however, daycare centers and crèches in the state would have to be equipped with specialist staff as needed. "Our central demand is and will therefore remain the introduction of a minimum staffing ratio that is uniform throughout the state, which adequately finances all tasks that the child day support law already specifies today," said GEW state chairwoman Annett Lindner on Thursday in Schwerin.

She was reacting to the results of a nationwide comparative study, according to which fourth graders in Germany are having increasing problems with reading, spelling and arithmetic.
