Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: "Global One": Economics Minister hopes for completion

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) is still confident that there is a future option for the 75 percent finished cruise ship "Global One" in Wismar. "There are talks about this and also a schedule that has not been questioned so far. I hope that decisions can be made in the near future that can be communicated externally," he told the German Press Agency (dpa) at the weekend .

However, a prospective buyer who could be considered as a buyer asked for secrecy, which applies to the state government as well as to the insolvency administrator. But he is pleased that there is interest in further construction of "Global One". "We are doing everything in the background to ensure that a good solution is found." According to information from industry circles, the US shipping company Disney Cruise Line is interested in the ship. However, this was not officially confirmed, not even by the shipping company in the US state of Florida.

The insolvency administrator Christoph Morgen had only announced that several options for "Global One" were being worked on and that talks were being held with several interested parties. A prefabricated building in Wismar is still the preferred solution. However, there are still no binding contracts with a buyer.

In the event that the more than 340 meter long ship is completed in Wismar, the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg, Lower Saxony, is in talks about taking over the management of this work. The transfer company for the insolvent MV Werften Group was recently extended by one month until the end of November. According to the minister, this decision is to be seen in the context of the negotiations.

The MV shipyards in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania filed for bankruptcy on January 10 of this year. Financial difficulties of the parent company Genting Hong Kong, mainly as a result of the Corona crisis, were cited as the cause. "Global One" is part of the bankruptcy estate. According to earlier information, the ship would be worth around one billion euros in its current condition. A major reason for a prospective buyer might be that the purchase price is now significantly lower.
