Rügen/Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The parliamentary group of the Greens in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has rejected plans to build an LNG terminal off the coast of Rügen. "The planned LNG terminal represents a serious intervention in the protected nature of the Greifswalder Bodden in front of Rügen," said the parliamentary group leader Harald Terpe on Saturday. It also threatens the income basis of the people on Rügen, almost all of whom live from tourism.
When building and renting terminals for importing liquefied natural gas, the green-run Federal Ministry of Economics calculates significantly more capacity than is probably needed for safety reasons. This emerges from a report by the ministry to the budget committee in the Bundestag, which was published on Friday. With the existing terminals and the planned projects, the Ministry is assuming a safety buffer of more than 30 billion cubic meters per year from 2027.
According to the Greens in the Schwerin state parliament, the gas requirement plan provides for a safety buffer that is far too large. "Apparently the Chancellor does not believe in the self-proclaimed turning point. Against the background of the climate crisis, the creation of fossil overcapacities is the wrong way," said Terpe.
"With the private terminal in Lubmin, the four floating federal facilities and the permanent onshore terminals, which are being implemented on the basis of the LNG Acceleration Act, we are doing our part to ensure security of supply in Germany and Europe," added the energy policy spokesman for the parliamentary group , Hannes Damm. "The available data make it clear that the European natural gas supply is secured from Rügen by the Europe-wide LNG expansion from 2024, even without an additional LNG terminal."
In mid-February, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) presented plans for the construction of LNG import facilities off the island of Rügen. According to this, two platforms are to be built about 4.5 to 6.5 kilometers from Sellin in the southeast of Rügen, on which floating liquefied natural gas terminals (FSRU) are to be moored.
