Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Health expenditure increased sharply in the first year of Corona

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Expenditure on health rose sharply in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2020. Compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019, they had grown by 6.5 percent to 8.8 billion euros, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian Statistical Office announced on Thursday. This is a jump of 333 euros per inhabitant to 5480 euros, which means that the north-east was also above the national average of 5298 euros.

However, according to the statisticians, healthcare spending was already growing steadily. In 2010, spending on purchasing goods and services in the healthcare sector was down by almost a third at 6 billion euros.

According to the statistical office, a large part of the expenditure made in 2020 was for statutory health insurance, namely 60.3 percent of the funds spent in the state for prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and care as well as administration and investments. Social insurance, on the other hand, had a much smaller share at 13.3 percent.
