Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Kroos gives up coaching in Greifswald: Vrabec takes over

Greifswald (dpa / mv) - Roland Kroos has resigned from his post as coach of Greifswalder FC from the Northeast Regional Football League with immediate effect. Roland Vrabec, who was only committed as his successor in the summer, will start work on Wednesday. As the club announced on Tuesday evening, the father of world champion Toni Kroos and former Bundesliga professional Felix Kroos is resigning for health reasons. The 63-year-old recently had heart surgery and is said to be recovering according to doctors' advice.

Originally, Kroos only wanted to retire from his post in the summer. "Of course it's a shame, but health is the most important thing," said Roland Kroos in the statement. He wishes Vrabec all the best and hopes that this path can continue. "Of course I will continue to be available to Greifswalder FC in an advisory capacity as planned," added Kroos.

In Germany, Vrabec coached FC St. Pauli and FSV Frankfurt, among others. Most recently he worked in Esbjerg, Denmark. In Greifswald he signed a contract until June 30, 2025. The team currently ranks 13th.

Kroos has held various positions at Greifswalder FC since 2017. Last season he led the club into the Regionalliga Nordost for the first time. Since he only has a B license as a coach, which is not sufficient for the fourth-rate regional league, he was officially called team boss this season. Before his commitment in Greifswald, Kroos worked for a long time in the youth division of the second division club FC Hansa Rostock, including as a youth coordinator.
